My nine-year-old is totally hooked on Zelda and really wants to dive into Ocarina of Time. He’s saving up to buy an N64, but they’re pretty pricey on eBay. He’s got a Nintendo Switch, and I’ve heard he might need a subscription to play it there, but I’m not sure. I also have a PS5, but I doubt that helps, and I have a MacBook Pro if he could use an emulator. To be honest, I’m kicking myself for donating my N64 with Ocarina of Time and a bunch of other classics back when he was born. Any advice you can give would be super helpful!

There are tons of ways to get your hands on Ocarina of Time! Aside from the Switch method, you could also look for a 3DS, which has a great 3D remake. You’d find it on the Wii or Wii U through Virtual Console, too. If you’re adventurous, emulators on your MacBook could work well, but remember to stay legal with your game copies!
Honestly, the subscription service is probably the easiest option. He’ll get to explore other games too that are part of that plan. If you can manage a few months of the subscription until he finishes the game, it’ll definitely save you money compared to buying old consoles and games.
Totally agree! Just keeping the subscription for a little while might be the most straightforward and economical way to go.
The best way to play Ocarina of Time right now is through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. It does come with a yearly fee, but it’s worth it for access to N64 games, including Ocarina of Time and even Majora’s Mask! Just make sure you get the right subscription, as there’s a basic one that doesn’t include N64 titles.
Yeah, that’s the plan your kid is talking about! You definitely need the Expansion Pack to access those classics.
Emulators can be a bit tricky, but they can give you access to many Zelda titles. Just look into it if you’re not ready to buy anything new.
