What are the best TTRPG systems for running a Zombie Apocalypse game?

-

I’m diving into creating a TTRPG set in a zombie apocalypse, inspired by games like The Walking Dead and State of Decay. I’m looking for recommendations on the perfect systems and expansions that fit my gameplay needs. Key features I want include: a morale or fear mechanic to induce panic, resource management and looting for essentials (like food, water, and ammo), shelter and base defense mechanics for horde attacks, contagion management for injuries to add tension, and possibly some battle map usage for intricate combat situations. I’m open to blending different systems and mechanics to get it all right. Any suggestions or insights from those experienced in this genre would be greatly appreciated!

All Flesh Must Be Eaten is a classic that has most of what you’re looking for. However, if you want to cover the scrounging and base building aspects, definitely grab the ‘One of the Living’ supplement. It’s also good to check which book has the rules for starvation and exposure—it’s one of them for sure!

Seconding this, it’s the classic zombies game for a reason!

I would recommend checking out Ashes Without Number when it drops. It seems like it might fit your needs well!

For a unique twist on resource management, you might want to try Red Markets. It’s a bit underrated but focuses heavily on economic survival against zombies rather than just combat, which could create some interesting dynamics in your game.

If you want high detail, I’d go for GURPS with the horror, zombies, and survival books. You can use the After the End series for more post-apocalyptic scenarios, but for something like more specific looting mechanics, look into games like Zombie World or The Shotgun Diaries. They add a fun twist to resource management, albeit with less flexibility.

I agree, GURPS gives you a solid foundation for any post-apocalypse setting!

Don’t forget about The Walking Dead RPG! The game mechanics are pretty cool and might suit your style, especially if you want a blend of narrative and action. Excited to see what you come up with!
