My son has recently gotten into Pokémon, and it’s got me feeling nostalgic for the days when I played Red and Blue. I tried out Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee on the Switch, but it felt too simplistic for my taste. I’m wondering what games are most similar to the gameplay of the originals. I’ve heard that FireRed and LeafGreen are remakes of Red and Blue and definitely better somehow. What other titles should I check out? I’m really into the top-down perspective too, and ideally, I want games that are available on emulators.

FireRed and LeafGreen are musts as remakes of Red and Blue. You should also consider HeartGold and SoulSilver, which are remakes of Gold and Silver, plus they bring lots of extra content. For something different but still top-down, give Emerald a go – it’s an enhanced version of Ruby and Sapphire and really enriches that classic experience.
If you’re sticking with Gen 1, FireRed and LeafGreen are solid choices since they’re remakes of the originals. If you want to try something newer, I’d recommend SoulSilver on DS or Alpha Sapphire on 3DS. Both capture that classic Pokémon vibe while adding some fresh features!
I have fond memories of starting with Blue! FireRed and LeafGreen are fantastic modern takes, and I really enjoyed everything through Gen 5. Platinum and Ruby are personal favorites of mine, offering tons of great gameplay!
