I’m putting together a gaming playlist for my daughter and eventually my son, showcasing the top games from each era—from classics like Pong and Oregon Trail up to PS2 titles. The plan is to play a couple of old-school games weekly so they can appreciate the evolution of gaming. While there are plenty of year-by-year best games lists out there, I’d love some personal recommendations to add variety! What retro games do you think are essentials for them to experience?

If your kids are still quite young, you might want to introduce them to some educational games from back in the day. MECC games are a blast and perfect for ages K-4. Titles like Secret Island of Doctor Quandary and the Muncher games, such as Number Munchers, are super fun! Even older kids might enjoy Dinopark Tycoon as a nice twist. It’s great to include some unique options alongside the classics!
I’m diving into the history of gaming right now too, looking at Wikipedia and YouTube. I’m definitely going to check out those suggestions for my emulation setup. I’ve got almost every console up to the NES, so I can’t wait to relive those classics!
