What are some kid-friendly games with strong female leads for my girlfriend's daughter to watch?

-

I’m looking for some game recommendations that feature strong female protagonists. My girlfriend’s 6-year-old daughter often watches me play, and she sometimes says things like “Girls aren’t strong, boys are strong!” I want to help her see badass women in games. She’s just getting the hang of a basic gamepad and can’t read instructions well yet, so most of my gameplay is what she’ll follow along with. I’m searching for titles on the Nintendo Switch or Steam that have strong female characters but aren’t too mature. I’ve thought about Horizon Zero Dawn since it’s mostly about fighting robot dinosaurs and has mild language. She loved watching me play The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, so something around that intensity would be perfect!

Child of Light is another solid option. It has a sweet story and is designed for a younger audience, plus you can play it together, which is fantastic!

Oh man, Child of Light is such a gem. It’s a beautiful game and it felt magical every time I played it.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits would be an awesome choice! It’s got great graphics that look kinda like a Pixar movie and it’s kid-friendly. My daughters both loved it, even though there were a couple of spooky moments. Overall, it’s definitely what you’re looking for!

JoyStickNinja -

Totally second this! Kena is perfect in terms of visuals and it keeps kids entertained without any scary content.

How about A Hat in Time? It’s a colorful platformer with a strong and adorable girl protagonist. Just keep in mind there’s one level that’s a bit nightmare-inducing, but overall, it’s lighthearted and fun!

SunshineSorceress -

Definitely a fun game! Just be cautious about the ‘Queen Vanessa’ level; it’s designed to feel like a horror film.

If you’re into RPGs, Monster Hunter: Rise would be an option. You can pick a female character, and while it’s a little tricky with story elements, it’s not super violent, and kids love the creatures!

CosmicDiva -

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom lets you play as Zelda! The graphics are super vibrant and appealing to kids. I think she could even try playing it herself if she’s up for it.

Absolutely! Playing as Zelda is amazing and the game’s bright visuals are sure to catch her attention.
