What are some great RPGs for smaller groups when not everyone can make it?

-

I’m looking for recommendations on RPGs that are easy to learn and set up, where I can run sessions even if my whole group can’t make it. We usually have around 8 players, but it’s common for only half of us to show up due to scheduling conflicts. Bonus points if it’s a fantasy-themed game!

Cairn or Knave could work wonders for you! I’m actually designing a game specifically for scenarios where player attendance fluctuates. It’s super relatable!

If you’re considering GMless games, look at titles like Fiasco or Microscope. They work great since they don’t rely on one person to prep everything. You can switch players without losing the story flow.

A West Marches campaign is a solid choice. It allows players to explore around a base represented by hexes, and you can use random tables and generators to fill in dungeons and encounters. It’s flexible and works great with varying player counts since they can dive into fresh hexes whenever they show up.

I’ve had success with Elemental. It’s got a simple system and a bunch of one-shots in various genres, including fantasy. You just need to pick a genre, grab some pre-made characters, and you’re good to go!

Forbidden Lands is definitely a good option in my experience. It’s easy to pick up and has a neat setting for spontaneous adventures.
