My buddy is currently deployed in the Middle East, and his internet connection is pretty rough. I’m looking for some fun games that we can enjoy together online without being hindered by frequent lag spikes or drops in connection. We’ve been experimenting with Baldur’s Gate 3 since it’s turn-based, but I’m still unsure about that choice. We usually love Monster Hunter, but it causes us a lot of issues with connectivity. I’m open to different genres, as long as the game doesn’t rely too heavily on a stable internet connection. Any suggestions for open world, turn-based, or just generally any games that can handle occasional latency issues?

How about trying out something like chess or Civilization? Both can be played turn-based, so you don’t have to rush things even if there’s lag. Board games like Wingspan or Root can also be played on Board Game Arena, which has a bunch of options for fun multiplayer games that don’t rely on a stable connection too much.
Board Game Arena is awesome! If you get a premium account, it’s really cheap and only one of you needs it. There are tons of games to pick from!
You might want to check out The Past Within. It’s a cooperative puzzle game where you and your buddy can play independently but still work together. It’s perfect for low-bandwidth situations.
Worms games are entertaining and they’re generally not too affected by lag, making them a good candidate for some fun battles!
Gloomhaven is a fantastic option too! It’s turn-based and needs a bit of strategy but should work well with a shaky internet connection. Plus, it’s super fun and engaging!
Oh, and Slay the Spire has a multiplayer mod; it requires some coordination but could work !
Also, Bloons Tower Defense 6 could be fun if you’re into tower defense games!
Dune Imperium could also be a solid pick!
