I’ve been curious about what Red and Blue actually do for a living. We see them participating in some tournaments, but they don’t seem to rely on that for income. Blue is a Gym Leader, but it feels like most Gym Leaders have to have second jobs since it’s likely not enough to support themselves. Red mostly battles, as far as I know. Is there any insight into what their actual jobs could be?

I mean, one’s a Gym Leader and the other’s a Champion. But based on later generations, a lot of Gym Leaders have regular jobs beside training.
The games and anime don’t really lay out a clear economy, so you kinda have to overlook some of these details. It’s a fictional world, after all!
The whole economy in the Pokémon universe is a bit of a mystery. Nurse Joy never charges for services, which suggests Pokémon Centers might be government-funded. Potions and Poké Balls aren’t free—people seem to just throw them around in the wild. Plus, trainers lose money when they battle each other, but it’s unclear why. Do they have some sort of law? And seriously, where do those swimmers keep their cash?
Maybe they keep a digital card tucked away! It’s a wild world out there.
Or a secret stash in their swimsuits, who knows!
Well, they could be making money through endorsement deals or something similar. Pokémon definitely solve a lot of issues with scarcity, so it’s possible they get paid for promoting products.
Red is technically a Pokémon Trainer, so he battles weaker trainers to earn cash. It’s like a legit way to make some dough while having fun battling!
Yeah, but it’s not exactly a goldmine! Just look at what I’ve been left with at the end of each game.
Exactly! Some definitely have side gigs to stay afloat.
