Hey everyone, I have this old computer at home that I wanted to repurpose into a homelab. It’s a low-end system with only 4GB of RAM. I installed Linux on it hoping for better performance, but things didn’t improve. After doing some research, I found out that cleaning out dust could help. So, I cleaned it up, removed the RAM, and reinstalled everything. But now, when I start the PC, it beeps in a 2-1 pattern. I tried removing the CMOS battery, cleaning the RAM and CPU, and reinstalling the CPU because it has integrated graphics. I’m at a loss and don’t have money for repairs. The motherboard model is ACER 11D4-M1, and I’m worried my father is going to be really upset! What should I do?

Sorry to hear about your troubles! It’s easy to mess things up when cleaning. Honestly, if the beeping continues, there might be a component that got loose or something else may have failed. Checking all connections again can sometimes help. But if everything looks fine and you can’t even get to the BIOS, it might be worth considering getting professional help if you can scrounge some funds together.
I hear you, man. It’s frustrating! Since you cleaned your system and it started beeping, you might want to consult the motherboard manual for beep codes. They can tell you what’s wrong. If you can’t find a manual since it’s an old model, try looking up the beep codes online for that motherboard model. It might give you a clue about what’s faulty.
Have you tried to see if your PC can boot into BIOS? You can do this by rapidly pressing keys like F1, F2, F10, or Delete when you start it up. If it gets into BIOS, that usually means your hardware is fine; the issue might just be with the OS. Once you’re in BIOS, try toggling the CSM option to see if it helps with booting.
Make sure you check the Linux boot loader as well. If you had Windows installed first and then added Linux, there might be some issues with the installation. But first, let’s see if you can even get to the BIOS!
Just remember, it stopped working after you tried to fix it, right? This can happen sometimes. Maybe give it another shot? Sometimes reseating the components again or making sure everything is connected snugly can solve those pesky issues!
Yeah, I checked online but I couldn’t find a manual for it. It’s such an old model!
