Hey all, just got my very first PS5 and I’m super excited! I bought Astrobot from the store, but since my internet is turtle-slow, I downloaded the game data onto my PC while waiting for my console to arrive. I was wondering if I could save some time and just move this downloaded data to my PS5 using an external hard drive. I’d plan to format the drive as extended storage for the PS5 (exFAT). Is it possible to copy the game data from my PC to the hard drive and then transfer it from there to my PS5? I checked online but only found solutions for moving stuff from the PS5 to the external drive, not the other way around. Any help would be appreciated!

Keep in mind that downloading games from unofficial sources, like you did, even if you’ve bought them legally, is considered piracy. It’s best to download games directly through the PlayStation Network for the safest and most reliable experience. Once you get your PS5, hopefully you can manage the download speed somehow to get your games directly from the official store.
Sorry buddy, but you can’t do it this way. As soon as you connect the external HDD to your PS5, the console requires reformatting it for storage, which means whatever data you had on it from your PC gets wiped or becomes useless because of encryption. I know the internet speed issue is a pain, but at least you’ll know that stuff you get through direct download would be good to go.
Unfortunately, it’s not going to work the way you’re hoping. When you format an external hard drive for use with your PS5, the data on it becomes encrypted. That means your PC won’t be able to access or transfer files back to the PS5. Essentially, you can’t shuffle the game data from your PC directly onto your console using the hard drive. You’ll need to download the game directly onto your PS5 when you get decent internet access.
