Tips for Naval Combat and PVP in Sea of Thieves?

-

I’m having a tough time with naval combat in Sea of Thieves. When I engage in PVP, it often turns into a long battle where I can’t seem to sink the enemy ship without going through a brutal war of attrition that lasts over an hour. I know about using chained cannonballs to take down the mast and the concept of the death spiral, but I rarely apply these skills. I guess I struggle with mastering the helm too. Any tips or strategies to improve my naval combat game?

If you’re solo sailing, avoid full sails during battles. Keeping your sails at half or slightly less lets you maneuver better around your opponent. Once you’ve demasted them, tighten the wheel to maintain control. Check out Msponge’s helm tutorial; it offers some solid advice on sailing techniques!

The best way to improve is just to keep practicing! Grind for that Hourglass curse, and by the time you’re halfway through, you’ll have a solid grasp on the basics of naval combat. Don’t be too hard on yourself; it takes time!

Practice makes perfect! Chain shots can be tricky, but you’ll get the hang of it. I suggest doing some Skelly Fleets; it’s a great way to get familiar with cannon ranges. Embrace any PVP encounters, and don’t stress too much about missing shots. You’ll still gain reputation, and learning is what matters! You might also join a fun discord crew where they focus on casual play.

Using chains takes some time to master, but they can definitely help you take down masts effectively. Once you feel confident enough, try using scattershot when you’re close. The key is to keep the pressure on your opponent so they can’t escape. Staying near them and consistently hitting their ship will increase your chances of winning. Just remember, with practice, you’ll nail the techniques like the death spiral. Keep those sails adjusted properly for better angles during fights!

Going faster in a death spiral can indeed make it harder to keep your angle right. Sometimes, a slower turn helps with aiming properly on your first try. Plus, adjusting your sails beforehand can buy you some time when aiming for their mast.
