Hey everyone! I recently got my hands on Into the Odd, and I’m really digging the unique vibe and style of the game. I mostly run one-shots with newer players, and I feel like this system is a great fit. However, I’m having some trouble with character creation. Since there are no defined classes or professions, my beginner groups find it challenging to come up with meaningful character concepts on the fly. They often feel overwhelmed by choosing just three stats and some equipment in a world that’s new to them, which makes it tough for them to get into the role-playing aspect. I’m looking for any hacks, tips, or tricks to make this process smoother. Should I provide specific questions, hand out quotes, or maybe even come up with some professions? Or do you think it’s okay if I just let them figure it out themselves? I’m really looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Honestly, you don’t need super detailed backgrounds with Into the Odd. It’s designed for simplicity, focusing on the action of play rather than epic backstories. A basic concept, like a fighter looking to explore for treasure, might be all they need.
Yeah, I get that! I’m not aiming for full biographies either; just something simple for them to grab onto. I want my inexperienced players to ease into the roleplay part, so a little hook would be helpful. But you’re right, the focus should definitely be on the actual gameplay!
