I’ve been using a Nvidia 4060 on Fedora for a while, and it’s been running smoothly, especially since I upgraded to Fedora 42 and started using Wayland. I’m considering getting a 7800XT as there’s a good discount on it, mainly for the extra 8GB of VRAM and added performance. My question is, do I just need to swap my current Nvidia GPU for the AMD one, or is there anything else I need to do? I already have the latest Mesa version installed. If anyone has experience with the 7800XT, I’d love to hear your thoughts too!

Switching to the 7800XT on Fedora should be pretty straightforward. Just uninstall the Nvidia drivers first, swap the GPUs, then run an update and reboot. You should be good to go! If you plan to use any specific software that requires acceleration, you might want to look into using RPM Fusion for extra support.
I got my 7800XT recently too and I’m really looking forward to trying it out! I’ll keep the community updated on my experience once it arrives.
From my experience, moving from Nvidia to AMD isn’t just plug and play, especially with the differences between various RDNA architectures. You may want to check forums or Mesa’s GitLab to see if there are any hurdles with the 7800XT specifically. Also, make sure to use DisplayPort, as HDMI 2.1 support isn’t great with Linux at the moment.
I actually have a 7900XT, which is in the same generation as the 7800XT. I found that it worked without any issues right away when I made the switch last summer. Just make sure the card you’re getting is in good condition. You might want to remove the Nvidia drivers beforehand just to be safe.
Congrats on deciding to get the 7800XT! Just as an FYI, on some distributions you might need a couple of extra packages beyond Mesa to get your AMD GPU working. I’m not entirely sure about Fedora, but it might have them preinstalled. Good luck with your upgrade!
