Switching from Console to PC: What Gear Should I Consider?

-

Hey everyone! I’m a console gamer looking to make the jump to PC gaming, and I have a bunch of questions about gear. First, I’m thinking about headphones. I prefer larger, over-ear headphones rather than on-ear styles like the Beats Solo 3 – are those more comfortable for long sessions? I’ve seen headphones priced anywhere from a hundred to several thousand dollars. What really drives those prices, and what should I look for in a good pair? Are noise canceling and sound quality the main factors? Also, do people usually wear headphones all the time or do some prefer speakers? I worry about long-term headphone use affecting my health, but I’m not sure how it compares to using speakers.

Next, I’m curious about keyboards. As a lefty, I wonder whether I should get a traditional layout or something customizable. I want a quiet keyboard that doesn’t interrupt my gaming flow, but it’s hard to find one that fits that description.

Then there’s mousepads. Are they really necessary, and does a larger size make a difference in gameplay?

Lastly, regarding chairs, I’ve heard mixed reviews about gaming chairs. Are they actually comfortable, or should I look for a good office chair instead? And about backing up my games – I plan to store a lot on my new PC. Since most of my games are on Steam, how do I back those up? What should I use for it? Thanks for any advice!

The Beats Solo 3s you mentioned are actually on-ear headphones. If you’re looking for something larger, over-ear headphones are generally more comfortable and can isolate sound better. When it comes to expensive headphones, features like surround sound, active noise cancellation, and wireless options often justify the cost, but it really depends on personal preference. For keyboards, definitely check out some different styles in person; you might find that a quiet switch mechanism suits you well! Also, mousepads improve precision quite a bit in gaming, especially if you go for a larger one!

But are there no truly quiet keyboards out there? I’m looking for something that’s not all clicky!

You don’t have to spend a ton on headphones! I used a set of Corsair headphones that cost around $100 for years, and they served me well before I upgraded to some studio-quality ones that are about $300. Just keep in mind, if you get high-end studio headphones, you might need an audio interface to connect them properly. As for comfort, larger over-ear headphones are typically more comfortable for longer sessions, so that’s a good choice! And yeah, mousepads are key for gaming – a big one lets you move the mouse freely without lifting it. I’d recommend getting one that fits your space!

Do I really need to worry about audio interfaces if I’m just gaming? And are headphones always better when I’m alone for audio? What if I’m going casual without causing bumps?
