Hey everyone! I just wrapped up Expedition 33 a couple of weeks ago and I’m on the hunt for a new JRPG that dives deeper into a darker, more mature storyline. I want to steer clear of the typical anime tropes and I’m especially looking for something that’s grind-friendly. Here’s a list of some games I’ve already played: Final Fantasy 1-6 (only really familiar with 4), Final Fantasy 7 Remake/Rebirth, Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Engage, Dragon Quest: Monsters and 3, the Xenoblade Chronicles series, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, and of course, the Yakuza and Disgaea series. I’ve also played the Trails in the Sky 1 but might hold off until the remake comes out. Lost Odyssey is pretty much the ideal comparison for the tone and gameplay of Expedition 33, though I’ve already finished it, and I’m not keen on setting up an emulator for more. I’m open to trying out any games, even those not on my list. Any recommendations?

If you’re into darker themes, the Xenoblade Chronicles games could be a hit for you! The tone is similar to Expedition 33 and the emotional depth is remarkable.
You should definitely check out Octopath Traveler! It’s got a mature theme, beautiful graphics, and a fantastic soundtrack. Plus, some of the fights can be pretty challenging, which adds to the grind factor too!
Nier Replicant hits a lot of the marks you’re after. It’s not grinding-centric, but it definitely captures a dark atmosphere and moving storyline. If you loved E33, you’re likely going to dig this one.
Definitely go for it! It’s an emotional ride for sure.
I’m seriously leaning towards Nier now! The vibes were so similar when playing E33.
For something truly dark, you might want to explore SMT Nocturne or Shadow Hearts. They steer away from typical JRPG tropes and really delve into darker material. It’s a bit of a shift, but worth it for that mature experience.
The Yakuza series is great, but I feel like after playing Expedition 33, starting Yakuza can feel a bit slow-paced and clunky. The vibe is definitely different, but it’s really engaging if you want to settle in for a unique narrative experience. Just a heads up!
Yeah, I thought the same! I’m looking more for a matching tone right now.
I totally get that! You might connect with Yakuza 0 better if you liked Expedition 33.
I’ve had my eye on Octopath Traveler for a while. I think I’ll grab it when it’s on sale!
