I’ve hit a tough spot in the game during a large battle, and I could use some advice. I’m level 19, focused on archery (a bit like Skyrim), and I’ve gathered everyone I could for this fight. However, things aren’t going well. Every time I try, I end up with around twenty characters chasing after me. I’ve been kiting them somewhat effectively and quick saving after knocking a few down, but inevitably, one crucial character dies while I’m dodging a swarm of enemies. How on earth am I supposed to keep this guy alive when I’m being overwhelmed like this?

I get your struggle! I faced this dilemma at level 25 and had to switch gears. I started a new character to power through the main quest at a lower level first, then went back to the rest later. Sometimes you just gotta change it up!
Man, I totally get it—sometimes you really just have to lower the difficulty to make some progress. If you don’t want to do that, I’d suggest leaving the area to work on your gear and enchantments, then come back stronger. It can really help!
Oh, and if you stick with archery, definitely use enchanted arrows! I like to carry arrows of immolation—they’re super helpful. Hit me up if you need tips on enchanting!
Have you tried using Area of Effect Paralysis spells along with AoE arrows? It might give you enough breathing room to deal with threats.
This is one of the tricky parts with Oblivion’s scaling system. As you level up, enemies get tougher too. By the time you’re level 20-25, your opponents are all the hardest versions you can face, which makes this battle even nastier.
Are you rushing into the Great Gate as soon as it opens? The trick is to go through when Martin is clear of combat to keep him alive—just remember, it’s on a timer! You’ve only got 15 minutes before things get hectic.
If your illusion skill is decent, cast a 100% chameleon spell on him. That way, enemies won’t target him. I had to do that during the final main quest when my character was level 34, and NPCs were just getting wrecked.
