Hey everyone! I’m at the part in Oblivion where a huge battle takes place, and I’m finding it really tough. I’ve got my character to level 19 and went for an archery build (big mistake from all my Skyrim experience). I’ve attempted this fight a few times, but I keep getting overwhelmed by around 20 enemies. I can manage to kite them a bit and quick save after taking some out, but a key character always ends up getting taken down while I’m trying to run away. Any advice on how I can keep this character alive when I’m being chased by so many foes?

Oblivion’s scaling can be terrible! It really punishes you for leveling up. When you are between level 20 and 25, the enemies become far tougher than before. Honestly, your options are either to lower the difficulty or use some OP spells and enchantments to give yourself a fighting chance.
When I did this quest at level 38, I had to stick with Martin and heal him constantly until I was ready to make a break for the objective. I also had some solid enchantments that helped me reflect most damage back.
Another tip is to try using an Area of Effect paralysis spell along with AoE arrows to manage the crowd more effectively.
You might want to consider lowering the difficulty just to get through this part. Sometimes you just have to do it to progress in these crazy hard battles. If you’re set against that, maybe retreat and work on improving your gear and enchanting before jumping back in.
Are you heading through the Great Gate as soon as it opens? It’s best to go in right when Martin is safe from combat. If you time it right, he might not die. Just remember, there’s a 15-minute timer on that gate—so don’t get sidetracked.
Thanks for the advice, everyone! I managed to get through! I went back to a prior save, stocked up on potions, and focused on protecting Martin instead of just kiting. Still a huge pain, but it’s done!
I get the struggle! I was level 25, and I had trouble keeping Martin alive too during the Bruma battle. I ended up starting a new character just to tackle the main quest at a lower level before going back to my main one.
If your illusion skill is high enough, you could cast a 100% chameleon spell on him. That way, he won’t get attacked at all! I did that in a final quest when I was level 34, and it saved the NPCs from getting wrecked!
Oh, and if you decide to stick with archery, make sure you’re using enchanted arrows! I always go for arrows of immolation. If you want help with enchanting, just ask!
