I’m hitting a tough spot in the main storyline where this massive battle happens. I’ve gathered all my allies and I’m at level 19 with an archery focus (thanks to my Skyrim habits). I’ve tried the fight a few times, but I end up being chased by a bunch of enemies—around 20 or so! I can kite them reasonably well, and I save after taking a few out, but eventually, one of my key allies gets killed while I’m trying to dodge all these attackers. How on earth am I supposed to keep my ally alive while tanking all these guys?

When I did this quest at level 38, I had to stick close to Martin and heal him continuously until I could sprint to the objective. For my own survival, I relied on enchantments and a custom spell to reflect damage.
I totally feel you! I’m struggling with this too. I’m at level 25, and I don’t think I can keep Martin alive during the Bruma battle, so I just started a new character to go through the main quest at a lower level first and then finish the rest later. Seems less stressful that way!
Thanks for all the help, everyone! I managed to push through this time. I went back to a previous save, stocked up on potions, and concentrated more on keeping Martin safe instead of just kiting. Quite the hassle, but I got it done!
Are you entering the Great Gate as soon as it opens? It’s been said that if you wait until Martin is free from combat, you can get through safely. Just remember, you’ve got a timer of 15 minutes, so don’t get sidetracked! Otherwise, it might be time to drop the difficulty for a bit.
Have you thought about lowering the difficulty? Sometimes you’ve got to make that call to push through, especially with how tough this game can get. If you’re against that, try stepping back, working on your gear and enchantments, and come back stronger.
Absolutely! If you stick with marksman, definitely get some enchanted arrows. I’ve had great success with arrows of immolation. Let me know if you need help with the enchanting!
You might want to try using an Area of Effect (AoE) paralysis spell combined with AoE arrows. That could help cover you while you’re fighting off the enemies!
The enemy scaling in Oblivion is really brutal. By the time you hit levels 20 to 25, you’re facing the hardest versions of monsters! Just remember, you can always lower the difficulty or use some crazy spells to get an edge.
If you have a high enough illusion skill, just cast a 100% chameleon spell on him. That’s what I did in a similar situation, and it worked like a charm!
