I’ve got a bit of an impatience itch and I’m considering upgrading my GPU. I have my eye on a new 4090 Liquid Suprim, but I was initially set on the 5090. However, they’re hard to find in the UK and pre-orders went super fast. Now I’m looking at 3 to 16 weeks for a restock. I’m rocking a system ready for a 4K 120Hz monitor, which I don’t plan to change for years. I mostly play offline, chill-out sims and racing games, not chasing max FPS, just anything over 60 works for me. Is getting a 4090 now a smart move, or should I tough it out and wait? Price per performance isn’t a big deal, I just want a strong setup pushing 120fps.

The 4090 is still a powerhouse card and would be a substantial upgrade from your 3080. Plus, it comes with a large VRAM capacity that will ensure excellent performance for years. If future-proofing and having top-tier power is your goal, you won’t regret going for it.
I’ve been using a 4080, and even with that, most games are hitting 120 fps. An OLED monitor would enhance your experience, and you might find the 4090 overkill like I did. Turning off that FPS counter helps you enjoy your games more without obsessing over numbers. I ended up selling my 4090 due to heat and noise, and my system’s much more pleasant now.
Given your setup and gaming style, the 4090 should serve you well, especially since you don’t upgrade your monitor often. If you’re looking for solid 120fps at 4K, the 4090 is more than capable of delivering that. Plus, it’s still one of the top cards out there. If you can snag it at MSRP, it’s not a bad decision at all.
Personally, I think you’re fine with what you’ve got for now. Your 3080 is still decent, and you even said you’re cool with just 60fps. Plus, with DLSS4 out there giving your card some extra kick, a brand new 5080 or even a Ti or Super variant might be worth the wait.
