Should I Upgrade My GPU from a 3090 to a 5080/5090?

-

I’m currently rocking a 5900X with an RTX 3090. I plan to move the CPU into a home server setup and upgrade to a 9800X3D for my main gaming rig. Right now, I’m using a 43″ LG 4K 60Hz monitor, but I’m thinking about swapping it out later for something with higher refresh rates, HDR, and VRR support. Given these changes, I’m wondering whether it’s worth it to upgrade my GPU as well or if I should just stick with the 3090 for now.

Honestly, your 3090 is still doing great in most games out there. The performance leaps with the newer 40 and 50 series cards haven’t been that impressive, and you’ll end up spending over $2,000 for a GPU that might not keep you happy in the long run. If money isn’t a huge issue for you, sure, go for it, but don’t feel pressured.

With the way the GPU market is right now, keeping your 3090 is the smart play. It’s tough to find significant upgrades for a reasonable price. Plus, your CPU might be holding back the GPU more than you think—upgrading that could really enhance your gaming experience without needing a new GPU just yet.

Your setup is solid as is, so no rush to upgrade! It seems you’re upgrading for a home server anyway, so why not keep the 3090 a bit longer? You could use that cash to fully build out a new rig or save for a future GPU upgrade when it’s really needed.

Exactly! If you’re not upgrading the GPU because it’s immediately necessary, focus on the other parts. Building a new desktop for server needs makes sense, and you’ll have the flexibility to upgrade the GPU when it’s truly outdated.
