I’m considering making Linux my primary operating system and have been using NixOS. However, I’ve run into some issues that are making me think about switching to Nobara. My current graphics card is a GTX 1080, and I’m worried it might be too outdated to get solid support. If I decide to upgrade my GPU, is it better to go with AMD for better performance on Linux? Also, is Nobara a good choice for daily use? I liked my experience with Kubuntu, but it often involved a lot of troubleshooting that left my system in a messy state.

Starting with NixOS as your first distro? That’s some serious bravery! The GTX 1080 is from the era after Nvidia began improving Linux support, but newer cards really do offer a smoother experience. AMD might be the safer bet if you’re looking for less hassle. I’ve got both an RX 7900XTX and an RTX 4080 Super, and I usually stick with Nvidia, but AMD has its perks. As for Nobara, it does a decent job of addressing some Fedora issues, but you might run into quirks like the Steam installation problems—it can get complicated without help. I’d say if you want to keep the KDE experience, try out distributions that come with it pre-configured like CachyOS or Bazzite, which might save you some headaches.
True, I’ve had similar issues with my Nvidia setup on new distros. Switching to AMD made my life a lot easier.
