I recently got my hands on a used Switch and I’m eager to dive into my very first Zelda game. I’ve heard a lot about how amazing Breath of the Wild (BotW) is, and since Tears of the Kingdom (TotK) is a sequel, I’m wondering if I should play BotW first for the context. However, I’ve also heard that TotK has some awesome new features that might make it worth playing without going through BotW. My work schedule is pretty demanding, so I doubt I’ll have the time to play both back-to-back. I’m more interested in enjoying the experience than completing every quest. Do you think BotW is really that special, or will I miss out if I jump straight into TotK?

I wouldn’t say BotW is more magical, but the vibe is different. BotW is all about exploration and taking it easy, while TotK ramps up the complexity with puzzles and dungeon content. If you’ve got to choose just one, I’d lean towards BotW first, but just know that TotK is longer and packs a punch in content!
Definitely start with BotW! It lays the foundation for everything. Jumping right into TotK would be like starting a series in the middle—so much context would be missed! And trust me, BotW is a joyful experience in itself; you’ll want to have that before moving on to TotK.
If you’re into the story, BotW is definitely the way to go. It introduces all the key plot points, like Link’s legacy and his connection with Zelda. If just pure gameplay is your focus, TotK’s new features are incredible! But you won’t get the same richness without starting with BotW.
I’d definitely go for BotW first! It sets up the story really well, and though TotK is amazing, you might feel like there’s something missing if you skip ahead. Plus, experiencing BotW for the first time is pretty magical in its own right. Just dive into it!
Exactly! Starting with BotW lets you appreciate the storyline much more when you get to TotK.
Honestly, I’d still say start with BotW. You can always play TotK later, and they both have their charm. BotW gives you the backstory you’ll want for when you do get to TotK.
Exactly! It’s kind of like watching the second Star Wars movie without seeing the first—totally confusing!
