I’m wondering if it’s necessary to play God of War (2018) to really enjoy God of War: Ragnarok. Are there significant story elements or character backgrounds in Ragnarok that I would miss if I skip the 2018 game?

You won’t be completely lost, but you’re missing out on tons of depth. God of War (2018) is fantastic in itself, so I’d recommend playing it first if you can. Plus, it’s considered one of the best games ever!
It definitely helps to play the first one. You get introduced to the characters and the storyline in 2018, which makes Ragnarok more enjoyable. If you really don’t want to play it, at least check out a good YouTube recap.
Absolutely, playing the 2018 version is a must! Ragnarok is a direct sequel, and you’ll miss a lot of context on the characters and plot if you jump straight into it. Trust me, experiencing the first game makes Ragnarok way more impactful.
While you technically don’t need to play the 2018 game first, I wouldn’t recommend skipping it. You’ll understand the characters and story much better if you do. Why miss out on a 10/10 experience?
