Should I Play FFVII Rebirth in English or Japanese?

-

I’m from Spain and sadly, FFVII Rebirth isn’t available in my language. I played the remake in English, and while I liked the voice acting overall, I’m not really impressed with the voice actor for Sephiroth. It feels a bit bland to me.

On one hand, sticking to English means I can enjoy the game without needing to read all the subtitles, but if I switch to Japanese, I might miss out on some dialogue since not everything is subtitled during battles.

Does anyone know what the original language is? I noticed in Final Fantasy XVI that the lip-sync matched the English words, but what’s the deal with Rebirth? I’d love to hear your thoughts and recommendations because I really don’t want to lose out on the emotional experience while playing. Thanks!

I’m not a fan of the English dub either, so I play in Japanese. Regarding lip-syncing, Square-Enix uses some tech for it now that makes it look pretty good across different languages, including French and German. I really don’t get why they didn’t do it for FFXVI, but I prefer English for that game’s act.

FFVII Rebirth is actually originally in Japanese. I haven’t played it in Japanese myself, so I can’t comment on the differences from the English version, but since they usually put a lot of effort into lip syncing, I expect it to be fine.

I played through the remake twice—once with Spanish subtitles and once with English. I found the translations often change phrases quite a bit, which was a bit annoying since I understood both languages. The wordplay and humor just don’t always translate well. As for lip-syncing, I remember it was pretty good in English, considering how much effort Square-Enix puts into their voice acting.

Just a heads up, going with Japanese might be tricky during intense fights since there’s so much dialogue happening. The English voice acting is solid, so I’d say you won’t be missing out much by sticking with it.

It really depends on what you prefer! Both English and Japanese voice actors are great, and I think you’ll still feel the emotional weight no matter which you choose. I’d recommend checking out some cutscenes you love from the remake in both languages to see which ones you connect with more. It’s interesting how cultural backgrounds can shape our preferences—I’m Portuguese so we mostly rely on subtitled content, and it does change the viewing experience a bit.
