I recently switched to a ghoul build and completely forgot to change my armor from Overeaters. I’m currently using Vulcan armor and I’m wondering: would it be better to stick with a full set of Vanguards or should I mix in some armor that offers damage reduction against specific enemies like mutant slayers or assassins?

I’d suggest focusing on enemy-specific reductions when it comes to power armor. Regular armor is useful for Vanguards, but power armor already has good resistances. I personally run a full set of Troubleshooter’s to deal with high-damage foes like Assaultrons and sheepsquatches.
Using a mix of slayer effects generally provides better protection. I’m planning on running 1 Chameleon and 4 Nocturnal pieces to boost my perception and agility significantly! It’s fun and effective!
That’s an interesting combo! Do you think it works with power armor too?
Honestly, I’d skip both and go for 4 Nocturnal plus 1 Chameleon. Vanguard’s DR feels pretty negligible, and while a mixed set addresses specific foes, it’s ultimately niche. The Nocturnal gives solid stats and boosts that far outweigh the minor benefits of more DR.
Keep in mind that the diminishing returns on Vanguard’s DR might not be worth it for most builds. A mix of damage reduction against specific enemies usually gives more benefits, especially since you can get a flat -15% against certain threats. Focus on tougher enemies where it truly matters, like super mutants or robots. Some other armor effects might also be fun to explore!
Exactly! It’s like stacking two pieces for tougher enemies can match Overeater’s DR.
I prefer a combination of 2x Troubleshooter’s and 2x Mutant Slayer’s myself. It performs much better than just going full Vanguard. It really helps against tougher foes.
Some of your choices should depend on your weapon setup too. I run 5x Vanguard with quite a few extra resistances, and it holds up well against enemies that go down quickly. If a weapon takes too long to kill an enemy, then mixed sets might be more beneficial instead.
I’ve tried that setup as well, and I’m really enjoying it. With the AP regen scaling, it lets me stay in VATS with my V63 LC for much longer.
