I’m trying to decide between jumping on a 7900XT for $800 now, or waiting to see if the 9070XT’s price stabilizes in the coming month. The 7900XTX is pretty much unavailable, and the 9K series is a bit all over the place with its pricing trends. My goal is to run the Metal Gear Solid 3 remaster at max settings in 1440p, aiming for an average of at least 90fps. Right now, my Ryzen 5700X3D is performing well with games like RE4 Remake and Stalker using my 6700XT, but it’s clear I’m hitting a performance wall with it. I also like to think about VRAM since I enjoy modding games like Skyrim.

For 1440p gaming, I’d always lean towards the 9070XT! It should serve you well without issues.
For 1440p gaming, I wouldn’t stress too much about the difference between 16GB and 20GB of VRAM. Honestly, I’d say go for the 9070XT—it should hold up just fine for what you want to do.
Overall, a 9070XT is likely to outperform a 7900XT, especially when ray tracing is enabled. Plus, 16GB of VRAM should be more than enough for 1440p gaming for the foreseeable future.
The Gigabyte OC model of the 9070XT has been showing up consistently on Amazon for around $730 before tax, and I’ve seen the Prime model for about $720 too. Given that you’re willing to spend $800 on the 7900XT, I’d recommend just grabbing the 9070XT instead. It’ll perform well at 1440p with the 16GB VRAM. Just need to keep an eye on those prices!
I feel you on that! It’s frustrating that every time I check, prices seem to jump back up to $1,000 or more. I know the 9070XT should settle around $800, but with my schedule, it’s tough to monitor these deals.
