I’m on the fence about whether to buy a PC with an RTX 4080 right now or hold out for the RTX 5090 when it comes out. I’m looking for a purchase that will last a long time, and I’m curious if waiting would be the better option for performance and longevity.

It’s a tricky choice since the 5090 is going to be a stronger card, especially if you can handle the wait. If budget isn’t an issue for you, go for the 5090. Just a heads up though, it’s odd to compare the 4080 directly with the 5090; you might want to consider the 4090 too. The 5090 is likely to have only slight improvements over the 4090 apart from possibly more VRAM, and you could save some cash by getting a 4090 now instead. But if you’re after the latest tech, then waiting is the way to go!
I faced the same conundrum! My plan is to wait a couple of years for the prices to drop and to pick up a 5090 once the market stabilizes and all the driver issues are sorted out. I just don’t see the point in jumping on a 4080 or even a 4090 right now. It’s all about timing with these things!
