Hey everyone! My old laptop with a 7700HQ and GTX 1060 is on its last legs—it barely stays on for 10 minutes. I’m looking to replace it soon and am considering whether to buy a system now with a 14900HX and a 4050, or hold off for a few months and see if I can snag something with a 5050. I mainly play older games that don’t leverage ray tracing or DLSS, so those fancy features aren’t really a draw for me. I’m curious if the performance upgrade from 4050 to 5050 will be worth the wait. Also, given the limited availability of 50 series chips, do you think they’ll even be in stock when they launch? I can’t stretch my budget to consider a higher GPU class like a 4060 or 4070 either.

I wouldn’t wait for the 50 series if I were you. They’ll likely be pretty pricey when they drop, plus if your laptop is dying now, it’s not worth the hassle. I just upgraded from a similar setup and I know how painful it is to wait. Grab a solid deal now and avoid the headache!
Honestly, I think you’d be better off just getting something from the 40 series now. There’s usually a bit of a wait for new models after the first launch, and who knows how supply will be for the 50 series? Besides, looking at clearance sales could help you snag a 4060 if you’re lucky!
If you’re struggling to find a 4060, you’re probably not going to find a 50 series laptop right away either. The performance jump isn’t huge, so you might as well get something decent like a 40 series and just enjoy it! I recently got a 4060 and I’m really happy with it.
It’s a bit odd to go for a 14900HX with a 4050 honestly. You might be better off looking at refurbished or used laptops that fit your needs better. Performance in CPU is important if you’re running VMs, so definitely weigh your options!
Yeah, totally agree! You can always find good deals on current models, especially for AMD options.
