Hey everyone! I’ve started a new job that requires me to move cities every month or so. I’m considering buying a used MSI laptop with a 3080 Ti for around $900, mainly for gaming and coding. My other option is a new laptop with an RTX 4070, which goes for about $1100-1200 in my area. My main concerns are the lack of Frame Generation (FG) and DLSS 3 support on the 3080 Ti, plus I’ve heard about potential overheating issues. At home, I’ll mostly use the laptop with a 1440P monitor, so I’m not too picky about the built-in display. What do you all think?

The 4070 can perform similarly to the 3080 Ti in many cases, but it does lag behind in VRAM-demanding games. Plus, don’t forget, the 3080 Ti supports FSR, which could be useful. That said, you might want to look into brands too. I switched from MSI to ASUS because I had issues with overheating on my MSI laptop.
Definitely go for the 3080 Ti if raw performance is what you’re after. It outperforms the 4070 in terms of specs. Just keep in mind the DLSS 3 and FG capabilities of the 4070, which are impressive. It’s a tough choice, for sure!
I totally hear you on the performance aspect! The 3080 Ti is a beast, but the 4070’s features are also really appealing. It’s all about what games or applications you plan on using more.
You should also consider other specs beyond just the GPU. The 4070 runs cooler and typically pairs with newer processors, which can be a significant benefit for longer laptop lifespans. Have you checked the full specs of both options?
Thanks for the tips! I haven’t settled on a specific 4070 model yet, but I really like the design of the HP Victus. I definitely want something that doesn’t look too bulky for office use, which is why I’m a little hesitant about the 3080 Ti.
