I’m seriously considering buying a Steam Deck, but I’m hesitating for a couple of reasons. My oldest kid loves playing Fortnite with me, and I’m not quite sure how easy it will be to get that set up on the Steam Deck. Also, I’m curious if Rust runs well on it. I’ve almost made the purchase several times before but keep talking myself out of it. Will getting this device really change my gaming experience?

You can actually play Fortnite on the Steam Deck for free using GeForce Now’s streaming service, which allows an hour of gameplay. There’s a workaround where you can log off and back on if you hit the limit. If you’re feeling more adventurous, there’s a way to set up Steam Decky and a workaround to play Fortnite without using GeForce, but that can get a bit technical for a newbie like me.
Honestly, I thought I wouldn’t have much use for a Steam Deck either since I’m a dad with little time for gaming. But I’ve found myself really enjoying 2D platformers; it reminds me of playing on a Gameboy Advance! If you’re hoping to dive into big titles like The Witcher or CS2, you might be a bit disappointed. They can run on it, sure, but the experience is way better on a regular PC. However, it’s perfect for games you might not usually play, like Hades or Dead Cells.
For me, the final push to get a Steam Deck was because I couldn’t find a Switch 2, and I really wanted something to game on. I mean, my birthday was right around launch day so I just had to have it. Mine’s set to arrive today, and I’m super excited to finally get to play with it after work.
