I’ve been playing this game carefully, avoiding fights with any factions so I don’t ruin future chances to interact with them. After reaching the village and getting a pass from Protocol, I’ve tried to stay friendly with everyone, but now I have a quest to collect items from the druids and it feels like I have no choice but to start big fights. I’ve heard this game lets you pick sides and have friendly chats, but so far Protocol is the only faction I’ve been able to talk to peacefully. Am I supposed to start attacking factions, or is there a way to handle these quests without violence? Am I missing some less aggressive options?

Protocol is basically the only faction you can stay friendly with during the village part. The outlaws and the druid-like cult are hostile by default, so you can fight them without much penalty. However, there’s a side quest involving one of those factions that leads to an optional ending, so beware if you want to keep all options open.
If you’re aiming to see all the different endings, it’s smart to keep your options open and play peacefully for as long as possible. Also, make sure to create save points before major choices so you can try different outcomes without replaying from scratch.
Everyone outside of Protocol tends to be hostile at first. Keep Protocol on your good side as long as possible if you want friendly interactions. You don’t have to attack them, but other factions will often be aggressive. Sometimes you can avoid fights by careful sneaking, but often combat is unavoidable.
From what I’ve experienced, the druids are pretty much aggressive no matter what, especially around their sacred areas. You might be able to get on better terms with their leader but generally they’re going to see you as an intruder or heretic until you follow their exact demands.
Just a heads up — Protocol soldiers are the only ones you’ll consistently find friendly. But in other maps like Skethermoor, they will attack unless you gain favor with certain characters like Captain Sims. Once you’re on his side, the troops in those areas will be more chill and friendly toward you.
