I’m on the hunt for a cooperative game that my young child and I can enjoy together—something cozy and sandbox-style. She loves exploring new environments and inventing little games of her own. While combat is alright, I’d prefer a game where we won’t lose items upon character death and where I can adjust the difficulty level easily. She used to enjoy the goose game, but we’ve played it to exhaustion. We also tried Lego Fortnite, but the camera movement frustrated her, as it didn’t follow her character smoothly. Ideally, the game should be in third-person or top-down view, controller-friendly, and playable on PC or Switch. We’ve dabbled in platformers before, but now I’m looking for a more open-ended experience where she can enjoy activities like crafting, farming, or simply roaming around.

You should definitely try Minecraft! Many folks don’t realize it, but you can switch to third-person mode. If you enable creative mode, it’s perfect for letting a kid’s imagination run wild as they build and discover. Plus, yes, split screen co-op is possible too. However, controlling the camera might be tricky since she can’t maneuver it well right now.
Have you thought about giving ‘My Time at Sandrock’ a try? It’s a perfect fit for crafting and exploring, just no driving—though you can ride mounts. It’s perfect for spending the day farming and mining. However, I think it’s meant to be played online rather than split-screen, which might mean getting two copies if you want to play together.
If you’re looking for something that’s gentle and memorable, ‘Journey’ could be great! The game lets you surf through sand dunes with very simple controls. It’s not only enjoyable but also a lovely intro game for kids around that age—my daughter loved it at five.
