RPGs with In-Combat Class Switching Mechanic?

-

I’m on the hunt for RPGs that allow you to switch your class or build mid-battle, similar to how the Final Fantasy XIII series works. I’m not looking for games where you can just swap characters or control different units in real-time like in Final Fantasy X or Breath of Fire IV. Instead, I want to dive right into combat with the same character, instantly changing their abilities, jobs, or moves. I’ve played games like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, which has blade switching, and Tales of Xillia 2, where the main character can switch styles. While I’ve tried FFXVI, I’m hoping to find something with even deeper mechanics and options. Real-time or turn-based combat is fine, as long as there’s a system in place for moving between builds while still being able to act in the same turn.

Nioh 2 is another excellent pick! You can equip two guardian spirits that you can easily switch between during battle. Each spirit offers unique abilities and counters, plus you can swap weapons on the fly. It makes the combat super dynamic and fun!

FFX-2 is a fun choice! Unlike its predecessor, you don’t swap characters in and out of fights; instead, you change jobs with your trio right in the heat of battle. Plus, the gameplay is genuinely engaging. I wasn’t exactly the target audience back then for its story, but the mechanics are solid! You might also like FFXIII-2, which has a similar mechanic—just a thought!

Have you tried Golden Sun? It lets you switch classes and abilities, and while it’s a bit older, it has some great mechanics that really allow for strategic combat.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin allows you to swap between two jobs mid-combat. If you’re looking for that class-switching thrill, this one nails it!

Check out Dragon’s Dogma 2! It features a vocation called Wayfarer that can switch weapons instantly in combat. You can mix and match abilities from any vocation, so it’s great for creative combo strategies. Just watching gameplay shows how dynamic it can be!
