Hey everyone! I’ve been diving into JRPGs lately and I really enjoy them, but one thing I struggle with is the giant franchises that have tons of games spread out across different platforms. I tend to enjoy series that have around 3 to 5 mainline entries. With the Steam Summer Sale approaching, I’m looking for some solid recommendations for JRPG series that have a reasonable number of games available on Steam.
I primarily enjoy turn-based combat, but I’m open to other styles as long as they aren’t tactical RPGs. I’m also flexible with story tones, although I do have some favorites. Here are some games I’ve loved in the past: Persona, Neptunia, Mario RPGs, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Kingdom Hearts, and even some non-JRPGs like DELTARUNE and UNDERTALE.
I’d appreciate any recommendations you have! Thanks!

The Ys series is totally worth exploring! It’s all on Steam, features engaging combat, and has a decent variety of stories. Plus, it has a good mix of entries that don’t overwhelm you with options.
You should check out the Legend of Heroes series, which is also known as Trails or Kiseki. It’s got a rich story and very satisfying character arcs. However, keep in mind that there are quite a few entries—around 13—but you can play through them in arcs, which makes it easier to manage.
Atelier Ryza is another great option. It’s an accessible series with a lighter tone and fun mechanics. The newer Like a Dragon games from Yakuza have also gone turn-based, so you might enjoy those, especially since there’s some good narrative there too!
If you’re looking for something with fewer entries, consider the Fuga Melodies of Steel trilogy. It’s a turn-based JRPG that’s about anthropomorphic animal kids and has a unique story. Plus, you can try a free demo of the first game, which covers the first few chapters. Definitely worth a shot!
I’d recommend Megaman Battle Network as well! It has a solid blend of strategy and RPG elements without being too overwhelming in terms of entries.
True, but the arcs do wrap up nicely. You can always stop after finishing one and come back later!
