I’m on the hunt for solid budget or midrange standalone capture cards that can record directly to a memory card. I plan to use it on an older computer to capture my display, and I want to avoid stressing my PC or relying on a second machine. Any suggestions?

Just to clarify, capture cards usually don’t take up much from your PC resources, which is why people use them. But if you’re connecting through PCIe or USB, it can depend on your setup and software whether it affects performance.
You might want to check out the Hauppauge Rocket. It’s a small device that sits between your console and TV, and it records in 1080p directly onto a USB stick. It’s been around for a while, so there might be newer models that support SD cards and record in better quality too.
Exactly! That’s why I’m looking for one that minimizes the strain, especially since my rig is a bit dated.
