Hey everyone! I’m looking to remake some classic 2D Zelda games using Godot and I’d love to get your feedback on a few things. Originally, I thought about porting Minish Cap to Android using the original artwork, but I don’t want to run into any piracy issues with Nintendo. So, I’ve decided to recreate it with my own hand-drawn 2D art style.
For Minish Cap, I’m curious about the art style: would you prefer the Toon Link art style from the intro/credits, or a more modern, manga-inspired style like Breath of the Wild? I’m leaning towards the manga look.
Regarding original designs, Link will have blue eyes, and there will be more gameplay content after defeating Vaati instead of endless battles.
For the NES Zelda titles, I plan to use a top-down approach – Link will have green eyes, possibly with a Twilight Princess manga style. Should I go with the official Nintendo 2D art style which means Link would have black eyes, or is the manga style better?
For Link to the Past, I’m thinking about similar art style options. Should he have yellow or pink hair? I’m personally in favor of yellow since pink seems off to me.
I’ll also do a similar art style for Oracle of Seasons and Ages. I’m skipping Link’s Awakening since it already got a remake, and I’m avoiding 3D game remakes due to the complexity of converting graphics. Instead, I might port some non-Switch titles to Android/Windows but not remake them due to piracy concerns.
As a complete beginner in game development, I’m eager to hear your suggestions or any thoughts you have on this project!

It’s great that you’re passionate about recreating these classics! Just remember, even if you’re using hand-drawn art, Nintendo can still be protective of their IP. Instead of remaking directly, maybe create a game heavily inspired by the Zeldas? Give it a unique twist with different names like “Legend of Yelda” or “Little Cap”. Just make sure all names and maps are sufficiently changed to avoid any issues!
If you’re set on going that route, just be cautious. Nintendo has a history of shutting these projects down, so make sure it has its own identity. The manga art style sounds appealing, and it’s fresh compared to traditional Zelda aesthetics. Don’t forget to test the maps for gameplay; the fun factor is crucial!
Exactly! It’s all about how you present it. If you make changes to the layout and gameplay while keeping the feel of a Zelda game, you’ll be onto something amazing!
Totally! Adding name selections for the player and the Princess sounds cool, similar to Pokémon. That way, players can feel more connected. Just keep those levels and temples unique while drawing inspiration.
