Need Help Deciding on a GPU Upgrade for 4K Gaming

-

I’m rocking an RTX 3070 but it seriously struggles with 4K gaming on demanding titles. I really wanted the RTX 5080 but the Netherlands pricing is wild: the cheapest model is €1600 and my preferred one is €2000. That’s twice the MSRP! Not sure if waiting is worth it.

I’ve got some alternatives for €900: the 7900 XTX or a used RTX 4080 Super. A new 4080 Super would set me back €1100-1200. I’m aiming to play games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Horizon at 4K, high settings, and high FPS. Right now, I’m only getting 26 FPS on Horizon with no DLSS, which is nowhere near enough.

Should I try holding out for the 5080 once prices drop to under €1500, wait even longer for the 6000 series, or go for a 4080 Super or 7900 XTX? Which option makes the most sense?

It’s quite the dilemma. If you’re set on high-end 4K, neither the 4080 Super nor the 7900 XTX will exactly bang out those top-tier FPS numbers without compromises. If DLSS does give you a good boost in FPS like you said, rolling with the 4080 Super, which supports DLSS 3, could be your best bet. Otherwise, patience and monitoring prices might be needed!

Measurement-wise, upgrading to a 4080 Super or 7900 XTX will definitely boost performance compared to what you’re getting with the 3070. But they might not achieve the max FPS you’re looking for in 4K without DLSS or similar. I’d recommend the 4080 Super, as it’s generally a little stronger and natively supports DLSS, which you mentioned helps your performance quite a bit. Be realistic about what current gen can deliver.

Given the tough pricing for the 5080, it seems unlikely you’ll see the suprism model drop anywhere near €1,500 soon. If you’re wanting 4K, high settings, and high FPS, the 7900 XTX and 4080 Super are in similar performance ranges but still may not hit those FPS dreams without tweaking settings. You’ll definitely benefit from DLSS-like features to lock down higher frames at 4K, no matter the card.
