I’m trying to decide on a portable gaming handheld since I’m planning to give my Switch to my kid. I usually play games on Steam, and having a device that can also handle emulation would be a huge plus for portable gaming. I’ve heard about the Steam Deck and the Rog Ally, but I’m looking for advice on which one would work best for my needs. Any recommendations?

If you’re considering the Rog Ally, just know that while it’s more powerful and has better battery life, Windows can be a hassle. I switched from a Rog Ally to a Steam Deck and have had a much smoother experience. The ergonomics and accessibility of the Steam Deck are unbeatable! For emulation, it covers most systems really well too, just not some of the latest ones. Go for the Steam Deck if you want an easy plug-and-play experience!
The Steam Deck, combined with EmuDeck, is basically a dream for portable emulation. You don’t even need LaunchBox for it! Just install EmuDeck and you’re good to go. If power isn’t your main concern, stick with the Steam Deck—it’s fantastic.
Going with the Steam Deck is a no-brainer! It’s designed for everything you need, especially if you’re into emulation. Plus, it’s got a great community and tons of support.
Definitely budget for another Steam Deck down the line; your kid will love it!
