Hey everyone! I’ve been having an issue with my PS4 Pro shutting down and giving me an overheating warning, but it’s barely warm to the touch. A few weeks ago, I re-thermal pasted and padded it, but I think I accidentally left out two T8 screws from a plate near the heatsink. Now I want to open it up again to figure out where those screws go, but I’m worried about losing the data on the hard drive if I remove it. If I take out the drive and boot into safe mode, will I need to have a backup? Also, any ideas why it might be thinking it’s overheating? Thanks for any help!

Check out the PS4 iFixit teardown video; it can show you where those spare screws should go. Did you also clean inside the PSU? That might help too!
Before you dive back into it, always a good idea to back up your data as a precaution! You can safely remove the drive while the console is off without losing anything. As for the overheating issue, it might be that the thermal paste didn’t spread well when you put it back together. That could cause the CPU to heat up really fast without the heat being distributed properly. And if those screws are missing from the heatsink, it might not be sitting right, so it can’t absorb the heat effectively. You probably should have checked for those screws sooner!
Totally get that! I hate waiting on backups too. If it’s good to go, I’d say service it now. I just checked my slim, and it booted fine. Also, regarding the screws, I thought they were just extras, but man, it’s likely they’re crucial internal screws. Lesson learned!
Honestly, maybe it’s time to consider upgrading to a PS5 if this keeps happening. Just my two cents!
Nah, not interested in a PS5 for now. But yeah, I definitely want to build a PC later!

Yep, I used canned air to dust everything out! It’s all clear now.
