Mixed Feelings on Final Fantasy V: What's the Consensus?

-

I’m currently diving into the 2D Final Fantasy series and have just finished the first four games. I really enjoyed FFIV because it seemed like Square was starting to evolve their storytelling. So, I was pretty pumped to start FFV, which I’ve heard lots of people say is underrated. However, as I’m now playing through it, I’m feeling conflicted. On one hand, I appreciate the graphical improvements; FFV looks fantastic for a 16-bit game and the soundtrack is really great, even though I’ve heard it called one of the weaker ones in the franchise. The job system from FFIII is also here, and it adds a fun layer of customization and replayability that I didn’t find in FFIV. Plus, the character interactions are more developed and the improved sprite work helps convey emotion well. But on the flip side, the story feels pretty formulaic to me. Maybe it’s because I’m a seasoned RPG player, but right now it doesn’t feel very engaging, especially compared to what I experienced in IV. I’m hoping the story picks up since I’m already in the final dungeon!

FFV indeed has a simple, light-hearted story that often gets criticized for being underwhelming. However, many players appreciate it for offering a break between the heavier narratives of IV and VI. It lets you enjoy the gameplay without the weight of a complex plot. So, while it might not be groundbreaking, it can still be a refreshing experience!

Totally agree! The balance between fun gameplay and a lighter story really works for some players. It’s nice to have a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously, right?

When I think of the first six Final Fantasy games, I see a pattern: odd-numbered ones like I, III, and V focus more on combat, while even numbers like II, IV, and VI prioritize storytelling. FFV’s charm lies in its vibrant graphics, upbeat soundtrack, and versatile combat. It’s true that it doesn’t have the depth of a mature story, but its gameplay keeps players coming back!

Right? The job system really gives it lasting appeal, even if the story isn’t as memorable. I find myself revisiting it just for the gameplay!

RetroRPGFan -

The story in FFV serves mainly as a backdrop for the gameplay. Yes, it has dramatic moments, but it embraces a more fun, campy vibe. The themes it presents are fairly straightforward and while that might not resonate with everyone, it definitely works for many. If you’re looking for plot twists, though, you’re not going to find them here!

I’m curious about those themes! I get that the plot isn’t super engaging, but if the themes are solid, I’d love to dig into them more.
