I’m really eager to ditch Windows completely and dive into Linux, but I’ve had some difficulties making the switch. One of the main issues is that I love playing Star Citizen, and getting it to run on Linux has been quite a hassle. Plus, I use a Tobii Eye Tracker 5, which doesn’t have support on Linux. If anyone knows of a gaming-friendly Linux distribution that works well with Star Citizen and supports the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 and HOTAS setups, I’d really appreciate your advice!

I’ve been gaming on Linux for a few years now, and Star Citizen actually runs quite well for me. I don’t have a Tobii or HOTAS, so I can’t speak on peripherals, but there’s a Linux players group called LUG with a useful wiki and tools to help with installations. Their Lug-helper is great to ensure Star Citizen runs smoothly on your system.
I made the switch to Linux not too long ago and I haven’t looked back! I’ve had issues gaming in the past, but since getting the Steam Deck, a lot of titles run fine on Linux. If you choose a distro like Mint or an AMD-based setup, it can be quite seamless. Just be prepared for some adjustments with peripherals, like using third-party software for things like RGB settings.
Star Citizen is listed on Lutris, so have you tried using that to install the game? There are some open-source alternatives for eye tracking on Linux, but their quality might vary. You could check out these links for more info on that.
I gave it a shot before, but it was a lag fest on Linux for me. I had to switch back to Windows because of performance issues.
Honestly, using Lutris along with Lug-helper should make getting Star Citizen working pretty smooth. If you have a decent HOTAS, you might have some luck, but it really depends on the model. Some cheap ones work without any configuration issues while others can be a pain.
Seems to be good for some folks, so just give it a try.
You might want to check the Tobii website for their Linux version. They have a download link there. Also, if you’re using an Nvidia graphics card, that could be causing some issues with certain games while AMD tends to perform better on Linux.
It’s cool that there’s a Linux version available now! I remember when I tried Star Citizen on Linux and found no support for Tobii, so it’s surprising to see it now.
I was part of that group for a while, but my performance was terrible back then. That’s why I rolled back to Windows, especially without Tobii support.
