Hey everyone! I’m on the hunt for some new tabletop RPG suggestions, but I’m a bit picky about what I like. Here’s what I’m looking for:
1. **Crunchy Character Creation and Action Rulesets**: I love the detailed mechanics of character creation found in games like D&D, Lancer, and Warhammer 40k—but I’ve enjoyed Fate too.
2. **No Roleplaying Rulesets**: While I know many gamers enjoy mechanics that guide role-play, my group is really good at improvisation and we don’t want those kinds of rules. Games like Cavaliers of Mars and Chuubo’s Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine are cool, but I’ve had issues with their systems regarding roleplay limitations. I also tend to ignore role-play elements in D&D if they’re present.
3. **GM Controls The Narrative**: I prefer games where the GM can plan for the setting and NPCs without too much interference from player actions. I’ve heard games like Blades In The Dark let players easily alter the narrative and that doesn’t appeal to me at all.
4. **Mechanics-Setting Independence**: I love Warhammer 40k, but I often want to run my own settings without needing to tie it back to the Warhammer lore. I’m searching for mechanics that can support broader genres.
5. **A Good Introductory Scenario**: It would be great if the game included a well-structured introductory adventure for both new GMs and players. Too many TTRPGs skip this step, and it can be frustrating!
Honestly, it seems like D&D usually ticks these boxes for me. However, I’m a bit tired of both D&D and the companies behind it, and I’m ready to explore more genres, especially sci-fi or superhero games. Any suggestions?

You might consider **Rolemaster** or **GURPS**. They both provide deep character customization and plenty of mechanics while allowing you to vary the setting themes to fit your storytelling needs!
It sounds like you’re searching for more traditional RPGs. Have you looked into **Call of Cthulhu**? It checks quite a few boxes and isn’t D&D. Plus, it offers a crunchy experience without heavy roleplaying mechanics.
For a good fit, consider **Stars Without Number**. You can adjust social skills to fit your group’s style, or if you’ve already got **Lancer** on your list, I’d recommend trying it out. It looks great, but let us know what you think after you test it!
Yeah, Lancer looks amazing! My only concern is some elements seem a little tied to the setting, but I’m keeping an open mind. Definitely on my list!
