Hey everyone! I’m diving back into Oblivion for my first playthrough in years, and I’m planning to roll with a Nord warrior using a sword and shield, along with heavy armor. It’s kind of a classic for me, and I really enjoy it! I’ll be playing on Expert difficulty, so I want something that’s solid but still allows me some flexibility. I watched a FudgeMuppet video about a Paladin build, which is close to what I’m aiming for, but I’d like to avoid sticking exclusively to Crusader gear throughout the game. I want the freedom to mix things up while keeping the core concept of my build. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! By the way, is magic crucial in Oblivion? I know a lot of builds involve it, but I hardly used any magic in Skyrim, and I’m worried about getting overwhelmed!

You might want to grab the Tower of the Nine shield from Stonewalls Shields in the Imperial City for 4800 coins. It gives you a solid boost with +5 to both Block and Heavy Armor, plus a magical shield effect! If you’re going for that Paladin vibe, look into investing in Alteration for defensive buffs and Restoration for stamina and health recovery. Just keep in mind that wearing armor can reduce your spell effectiveness, so you’ll have to balance it a bit.
Magic isn’t absolutely essential, but it definitely helps, especially on Expert. You need some spells if you want to deal damage effectively, so I’d recommend considering it. Everyone starts with two magic spells, and leveling your intelligence can boost your magic significantly. I’d suggest picking Illusion as a major skill to later cast paralyze spells, and maybe Mysticism for soul trap to recharge weapons. Also, look into Alchemy for making some restorative potions while you fight.
Yeah, magic definitely makes things easier for higher-level enemies. I somewhat wish they’d patch the difficulty balancing too; it feels a bit off sometimes! But yeah, the optional spells help out more than you’d think, especially for keeping your health up as a melee fighter.
