Hey everyone! So I’ve been inspired by playing RDR2 and really want to dive into a more realistic Wild West campaign. I’ve thought about using systems like Savage Worlds or GURPS, but I’m not sure which would suit my needs best. I’ve checked the usual resources, but I’d love to hear from folks who have hands-on experience with these systems or any others you think might be a fit. Also, if I go with Savage Worlds or GURPS, any tips on setting up the game in a way that feels authentic to the Wild West would be super helpful! Thanks!

I know it sounds nuts, but I’d recommend checking out Shadowrun 1st-3rd Edition! We once did a weird campaign in college that gave a gritty, grounded vibe without any cyberware or magic. The combat mechanics and tactical elements really captured the genre well. Plus, you can still sprinkle in low magic if you want. Just a wild thought, but it could totally work!
GURPS and Aces & Eights 2e are solid choices! GURPS has a dedicated book for Western campaigns which makes setting it up a breeze, especially if you go with the latest edition. Savage Worlds is definitely more action-oriented, so if you’re after something really grounded, that might not be it. Aces & Eights has tons of detailed systems for things like cattle drives, but it does get a bit crunchy. If you want realism, Aces & Eights could be the way to go!
I recently ran a western-themed game using Pressure. It was a blast! Definitely a fun and engaging way to experience those classic western vibes without all the bells and whistles of other systems.
Haunted West is another recommendation. It’s pretty extensive in terms of lore and background, and while the book is a bit heavy, the mechanics are surprisingly simple. Meanwhile, Down Darker Trails for Call of Cthulhu offers a solid, gritty experience, though it might be a little less lethal compared to the classic games. Both options have their merits if you’re exploring the Wild West!
If you lean towards Savage Worlds, consider grabbing the Deadlands book. Sure, it has some supernatural elements, but you can easily ignore those and still make use of its old west mechanics and rules for duels. Just remember, Savage Worlds might get a bit ‘pulp’ at times, while GURPS will give you more of a gritty experience. If you’re after realism, I’ve heard Sidewinder Recoiled is pretty good for pure Wild West themes!
Right? And I love that you can tweak the optional rules in Savage Worlds to suit your table’s taste.
Sidewinder Recoiled does sound promising! I’ve heard it keeps things focused on the Wild West and has some great mechanics for the setting.
Honestly, I thought you were off your rocker suggesting Shadowrun, but I can see how the mechanics might fit, especially in a more subdued context.
