Father’s Day is approaching, and I need help finding Switch games for my dad! He’s particular about his games—he really enjoys titles like Zelda and Final Fantasy and loves open-world games where he can explore areas that aren’t meant for him yet. His top three games are Tears of the Kingdom, Breath of the Wild, and Final Fantasy XII. I’m looking for games that fit the following criteria:
– Must be on Switch
– Genres: Action/Adventure or RPG (plus puzzle elements if possible)
– Rating: Teen or below (no gore, realistic violence, or foul language)
– Art Style: Not heavily anime-style and definitely no anime characters.
– Preference for modern games over nostalgic ones; he enjoys new gameplay and graphics.
– Gameplay is more important than story; he loves mechanics and puzzle-solving, often zoning out during cutscenes.
– Games need to be tactically challenging but forgiving physically—he appreciates a good challenge without needing quick reflexes.
– Couch co-op would be a fun bonus, but it isn’t essential.
He has enjoyed games like Skyward Sword, Hyrule Warriors, Final Fantasy IX, and Monster Hunter Stories 2, but found Link’s Awakening just okay. I want to find something new for him to enjoy, as he introduced me to gaming with classics like Ocarina of Time. Any suggestions?

You have quite specific criteria! I think your dad might enjoy “Immortals: Fenyx Rising.” It has an open-world aspect similar to Zelda, and the gameplay mechanics are engaging!
Have you considered “Tchia”? It’s an exploration adventure with cool mechanics. You can haunt objects and animals and there’s a nice balance of relaxing exploration, but it also has some darker themes. Definitely check it out and see if it fits your dad’s taste!
“Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak” is a great fit! It checks almost all his boxes for gameplay style, but it’s not really couch co-op. Still, it’s fun and rewarding if he enjoys challenges.
If he likes Zelda, he should definitely try “Echoes of Wisdom” and the HD version of “Link’s Awakening.” Other great picks include “Mario Odyssey,” “Metroid Dread,” or some indie games like “Hollow Knight” or “Ori & The Blind Forest.” They’re all solid choices!
