I’m on the hunt for some modern RPGs that really capture that SNES 16-bit vibe. I’m looking for games where I can pour in hundreds of hours, so strong build diversity and solid itemization are essential. I’d love it even more if they allow character creation, but that’s not a dealbreaker. Any recommendations?

Check out Waste Walkers! It’s got that classic feel and some engaging gameplay. Might scratch that 16-bit itch!
If you’re willing to explore some late ’90s options, check out Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber. It’s a unique mix of RTS and RPG with character customization. Or try Dragon Quest 9 from 2010; it lets you customize your characters and has some decent item management, though it’s a bit more linear.
Chained Echoes is also worth checking out. It’s designed as a tribute to the 16-bit era and has some great JRPG elements that might keep you hooked!
Don’t overlook Final Fantasy 5 Pixel Remaster. It’s a classic that has been updated beautifully but still keeps that nostalgic vibe.
You should definitely give Octopath Traveler (both 1 & 2) and Sea of Stars a shot! They both vibe really well with that retro aesthetic while offering modern gameplay mechanics.
Huh… apparently I bought this at some point in the past… I’ll definitely have to install this and give it a try.
