I’m on the hunt for JRPGs that have that MMO vibe. Everyone always recommends Xenoblade, which I totally get—it’s got that single player MMO feeling with its combat and exploration. But I’m really seeking something with tons of skills to grind and loot to collect, kind of like Rune Factory 4, but with more of an MMO feel. Old School RuneScape comes to mind as a comparison. I’ve had the .hack series on my wish list for a while, but I’m not entirely sure if that’s what I’m after right now. FF14 seems perfect too, but I’m mostly interested in single-player (offline) options. Ideally, I’m looking for games on PSP, PS Vita, 3DS, or Switch.

For a true single-player MMO experience, look into any of the Sword Art Online or .hack games. They really capture that single-player MMO feeling in a JRPG format!
Final Fantasy XII is definitely worth checking out! Especially the Zodiac Age version; it feels like a single-player MMO with a familiar travel system similar to FF14. It’s become one of my favorite entries in the series!
I’ve been meaning to try FF12 for ages! I’m just waiting for it to drop under $15. Maybe I should just go for it!
Totally seconding this! Zodiac Age improves on so many things from the original.
Dragon Quest IX is another great option; it offers a ton of content similar to an MMO experience!
Another good shout is CrossCode. It’s set in an MMO-like world, and while it’s more action RPG, it really captures that vibe you’re looking for!
And don’t forget there’s a demo on Steam! Might be worth a try.
Have you ever tried Fantasy Life? It’s a single-player game but packs in a lot of skill leveling and storytelling—it reminded me a bit of FF14.
Yeah, I agree! .hack may come off as a bit clunky now but the story really pulls you in.
