Hey everyone! I just picked up a used PS4 primarily to finally dive into Dragon Quest XI, which I’ve been dying to play. I also grabbed a few other titles with solid reviews, like Tales of Vesperia, Tales of Symphonia, and Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. However, I found the battle system in Tales of Vesperia to be quite a challenge, especially since I’m just getting the hang of the PS2 controller while playing Final Fantasy IX and have nearly 200 hours logged in Dragon Quest VIII. My previous gaming experience is mainly from the NES and SNES eras along with some Super Famicom emulation of Dragon Quest V and VI.
I’m determined to stick with the three PS4 games I have and get used to the controls, but I’m also wondering if there are any other JRPGs on PS4 that have control schemes more like Dragon Quest VIII, and I’d love to hear if the control mechanics for the Final Fantasy VII Remake are similar to the original FF VII on PS1. Thanks for your help!

The FF VII Remake is more action-oriented than the original. It does have an ‘automode’, but it’s not the most fun way to play. You should check out some Atlus games like Persona 3 Reload, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal; those have more traditional controls.
What do you think about the Atelier games? I’m intrigued by the alchemy aspect, kind of like the Materia system in the original FF VII. I might manage to enjoy a more action-oriented RPG if the alchemy mechanics are solid. I’ll definitely give these three Bandai games a fair shot!
