I’ve been trying to find good indie games that match my taste but keep hitting dead ends. I really enjoyed Firewatch and then played similar titles like What Remains of Edith Finch, Road 96, Mile 0, and Killer Frequency, which I loved. However, games like Outer Wilds, Subnautica, Last Records, and The Long Dark just didn’t click with me. I’m not exactly sure what I’m after, but I think I want games with strong visuals and a compelling story that aren’t too hard to get through. Any recommendations that fit this kind of vibe?

Have you looked into “The Vanishing of Ethan Carter”? It has a strong story with some light puzzles. Also, “Goodbye Volcano High,” “Observer,” and “Night in the Woods” could be worth a try if you want more narrative-driven games with distinctive styles. For something a little different but emotional, “Spiritfarer” offers a touching story along with relaxing management gameplay.
Sounds like you’re into walking sims and story-rich experiences. You should definitely try “Gone Home” — it’s a classic walking sim with a great narrative. Also, if you’re into puzzle-solving with beautiful environments, “The Witness” might be up your alley for some chill exploration and mystery.
If you want something with a slow burn and lots of exploration mixed with reading, “Sunless Skies” is pretty dark and atmospheric but packed with lore. It’s a bit different but very captivating if you like rich storytelling.
If you enjoyed those story-focused games, you might want to try the “SteamWorld” series. They have a unique style and blend of story and gameplay, though it’s a bit more action-oriented. Also, on Xbox Game Pass there are some good indie picks like Kona 1 & 2, which have solid stories, Dysmantle for a big open world, and puzzle games like Cocoon or Botany Manor if you want something more laid-back.
Thanks! I actually hadn’t heard of “Spiritfarer” before — gonna check it out since I like emotional stories with chill gameplay.
