I just got a PS5 after a long break from PlayStation—haven’t had one for 10 years. I still enjoy playing Final Fantasy X on my laptop, but I want to find some new RPGs. Ideally, I’m looking for an RPG that isn’t heavy on fast reflex-based combat or button mashing. Turn-based or tactical combat would be great since I’m not very good with quick action sequences anymore. Also, I’d prefer games with realistic or high-quality graphics to get a truly immersive experience. Not sure where to look or which games fit this description—any recommendations?

If you don’t mind a bit of stylized rather than realistic graphics, games like Persona 3 Reload, Persona 5 Reload, and Metaphor: ReFantazio are fantastic turn-based JRPGs with deep stories. They’re anime-inspired in style, so not ultra-realistic, but the gameplay is very much turn-based and they have engaging narratives. Another upcoming turn-based game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, promises realistic graphics and a JRPG vibe, worth keeping an eye on if it’s close to release.
If you’re after turn-based RPGs with stunning and immersive worlds, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a top pick. It’s turn-based, has fantastic graphics, and offers tons of ways to approach combat, including stealth and dialogue options to avoid fights. Many people rave about how it balances story and gameplay, and even if you’re not a fan of turn-based games, this one stands out because of its flexibility and depth.
For something with really realistic visuals and an immersive world but not turn-based, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is legendary. While its combat is action-oriented, you can take it slow, especially on easier difficulties, and the focus on exploring, interacting with NPCs, and diving into side quests makes it a deep RPG experience that’s very accessible if quick reflexes aren’t your thing.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns might be a cool fit if you want turn-based combat with a strong story. You create your own character and the gameplay mixes tactical battles with superhero flair. It’s pretty fun and not too demanding in terms of fast inputs. Good option if you want something a bit different.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance and its sequel also fit your criteria pretty well. While it’s real-time combat rather than turn-based, it’s slower paced and more about strategy and timing than fast button mashing. The game focuses a lot on realistic medieval life and has some of the most grounded and immersive worlds out there, which many players find captivating.
Thanks! Baldur’s Gate 3 keeps popping up, sounds like I should definitely check it out.
